Drawing a hot city

video animation “City Sizzle”

Inspired by a recent heat wave in London and the hot, energetic, fun atmosphere of Joe Locke’s “Pharoah Joy” from his 2009 release ‘Mutual Admiration Society 2’ (Sharp Nine, 2009), I started playing around with a newly discovered drawing app for iPad, which lets you capture the creative process. Here’s the first result…

The tool is called SketchBook Pro for iPad – there are admittedly others that do the same job, but so far this is my clear favourite. Some post production is obviously still needed.

Some might have noticed that the music on this video has been changed. This is due to a rather bewilderingly bitter approach by the former label that owns the copyrights to this recording by Joe Locke, the artist I manage. While I admittedly did not seek specific usage permission due to my close association with the artist and the assumption that bringing great music back into people’s ears can only be beneficial to the label (Mea Culpa), I did not expect to get threatened – via YouTube, but initiated by the label – with court proceedings. What looked like a misguided strategy to keep some great music inaccessible and away from the public, turned out to be based on the simple stupidity of a badly advised individual.

Never the less, the original tune of this animation had to go, and our immediate new choice was the fabulously upbeat “Pharoah Joy” from the 2009 Sharp Nine Recording “Mutual Admiration Society 2″. Thanks, Marc Edelman, for allowing us to use it without a even a wink.
