This is the second packaging done by nadworks for the TSYJO, Tommy Smith’s talent packed youth orchestra in Scotland.
Tommy is a dear friend who we’ve been working with since 2005 on creative projects across multiple channels — digital and web, merchandising products, above the line advertisement, PR and album design. The TSYJO‘s second recording (after the 2007 “Exploration”, featuring Joe Locke), is a long awaited next step and puts into focus once more Tommy’s extraordinary ability to spot and nurture artistic talent and bringing these young musicians together in a band context while driving creative expression, improvisation and professional attitude of a touring orchestra.
The idea here is to work with contrast, create a modern, casual grunge look by using big bold type and applying photo filters to the great glossy original photography by Colin Robertson and. At the time my recent discovery and subsequent enthusiastic snap-happy use of the hipstamatic iPhone App definitely lead to the inspiration of this approach.
It helped that I was to redesign the TSYJO‘s official website at the same time, which was in need of a general refresh. The design that was chosen for the new CD would translate seamlessly into the web version. Both projects launched almost at the same time.
